CBD Shows Promising Results for Pain Management in Dogs
A study conducted at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine focused on the use of CBD for pain management in dogs. The results showed that over 80% of dogs with osteoarthritis experienced a decrease in their pain levels. This reduction in pain allowed the dogs to be more comfortable and active. However, due to the high dosage used in the study, there were concerns about the short-term safety of CBD.
Instead of immediately turning to CBD products for your dog’s pain, it is always recommended to have your dog examined by a veterinarian first. Depending on your dog’s underlying condition, traditional pain and anti-inflammatory medications may be more suitable. Additionally, joint supplements and fish oils can also be beneficial for dogs suffering from arthritis pain.
What About Seizures?
A study conducted at Colorado State University (CSU) focused on the use of hemp-derived CBD for dogs with epilepsy or seizure disorders. The goal was to decrease the frequency of seizures with minimal side effects, similar to other anti-seizure medications. The study showed that 89% of dogs experienced a decrease in seizures while taking CBD, alongside their traditional anti-seizure medications.
Another ongoing study at CSU is evaluating the safety and effectiveness of CBD in dogs with uncontrolled seizures, as well as its potential interaction with other medications. Until conclusive results are obtained, it is not recommended to give CBD to dogs with seizures.
Can CBD Help Anxious Dogs?
CBD has been the subject of recent studies involving dogs and their response to stressful situations. In one study, dogs were given CBD chews before a stressful event, and an impressive 83% of them showed a decrease in stress and anxious behaviors. However, further research is needed to explore the use of different CBD products and dosages in order to effectively treat anxiety in dogs.
Meanwhile, a separate study in western Australia has shown promise in using CBD to reduce reactivity in dogs living in shelters. While these findings are exciting, it is important to consult with your veterinarian and seek guidance from a certified dog trainer or behaviorist to address any behavioral issues your dog may have.
Nonetheless, always consult your vet about using any supplements such as CBD. It’ s best to get a professional opinion rather than taking chances when it comes to anything you give your dog.
