How Much Should I Feed My Dog?

Portioning, Feeding Duration, and More…

Many people will give different types of answers based on their experience. However, the scientific facts related to feeding dogs need to be emphasized during the maintained feeding schedule.

Usually, puppies should not be separated before they are eight weeks old. However, sometimes orphaned puppies may exist. Usually, about five percent of the body weight may be taken as a guideline for the quantity of food to be given to the puppies. However, the amount consumed by the dog also varies with its size.

However, one can use a thumb rule for feeding the puppy. Feed until you see moderate, visible fullness of the abdomen. If you are going on feeding the animal without giving emphasis to its stomach appearance, then the puppy may experience some digestive upsets and diarrhea.

This may cause inconveniences to the owner as well as the puppy. Unlike adult dogs, puppies need to be fed with restricted amounts of food but at greater frequencies. However, once the age advances, the feeding amount may be increased to some extent as the frequency of feeding is decreased.

A dog on a raw diet may consume only two to four percent of its body weight. Just observe the feeding pattern of the dog and its body condition. If the dog becomes obese, reduce the quantity of food. If the dog becomes thin, then increase the feeding.

As mentioned earlier, puppies and adolescent dogs eat more than adult dogs. Likewise, the geriatric dog eats less than the adult dog due to reduced movement. Remember to restrict the amounts of protein during feeding to aged dogs.
