Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm prevention in dogs is important. In addition to pill-shaped tablets and oral drops, beef-flavored lozenges are available. All these options provide a protective measure against the prevalence of heartworms. Since heartworms come from mosquitoes, avoiding dog bites from mosquitoes is also important.

This means providing mosquito protection and a natural, safe repellent in the environment or using another skin product. Plan preventive measures throughout the year for only a few months of the year depending on the climate in your area. For example, mosquitoes are inactive in some areas during most of the colder months, making it no longer appropriate to take measures to prevent heartworms.

On the other hand, the mosquito threat is unknown in many countries. In this case, use oral medications for worms. They should help prevent heartworms, hookworms and other vector-borne diseases. These medications should be taken according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Always be aware of possible side effects.

All complications must be reported to the veterinarian immediately if you notice a bad reaction (minor or worse) during the preventive treatment. Pets prefer soft beef tablets because they taste good and are easy to digest. Contact your veterinarian if heartworm medication is missed. Such a pet must be tested for heartworms.
