The Science of Communication with Dogs

Dogs have developed the ability to recognize spatial directives, making them the perfect social tool for herding and hunting. They have also developed a special sensitivity to the human voice, allowing them to identify when they need to respond to what’s being said. Although there are significant differences in how dogs and children understand our communication, dogs view human pointing as a mild command, while children see it as a way of transferring information.

Researchers have discovered that puppies respond positively to the high-pitched, sing-song tone that humans often use when speaking to them. In a study conducted by Nicolas Mathevon and his team at the University of Lyon, 30 women were recorded speaking to a dog’s photograph using phrases like “Hi! Hello cutie! Who’s a good boy?” The results showed that the women used a different tone of voice when speaking to the dog compared to when they repeated the same phrases to a person. Interestingly, the pitch of their voice was even higher when looking at puppy photos. This study suggests that speaking to dogs in a certain way may help them learn words, much like how babies learn from baby talk.

A team of researchers conducted short trials with 10 puppies and 10 adult dogs at an animal shelter in New York City. They played recordings of dog-directed speech and women speaking to a person, and videotaped the dogs’ responses. The results showed that nine of the puppies reacted strongly to the dog-directed speech, even when it was made for an older dog. They barked, ran towards the loudspeaker, and even initiated horseplay. On the other hand, the adult dogs showed no interest in the recordings, regardless of whether they were directed at puppies, older dogs, or humans. They simply glanced at the speaker and ignored it.

The scientists have yet to determine whether puppies have an innate response to dog-directed speech or if it is something they learn. Further investigation is also needed to ascertain whether the words used in dog-directed speech hold more meaning for the puppies or if it aids their word learning. In the meantime, when you speak to your puppy in a doggy manner, make sure you’re prepared to engage in playtime.
